Most thermal shipper spec sheets give you a temperature range, a number of hours, and a standard name. None of those three things mean what a buyer usually assumes. Here is what each one is actually telling you, and what to ask for before you qualify a shipper for a lane.
The standard names, and what each one certifies
Three ISTA references show up on thermal packaging literature, and they do different jobs.
Standard 20 is the design and qualification process for an insulated shipping container. It is the structure for designing, testing, verifying and independently certifying a specific container.
Testing Standard 7E is the set of thermal profiles you test against. ISTA built them from real-world transport data gathered in summer and winter campaigns across 82 shipping lanes, and publishes them in 72-hour and 144-hour formats.
Procedure 7D is the older development test, and this is where buyers get misled. ISTA’s own overview of 7D says its cycle profiles are general simulations not intended to represent worst case exposure, that they are not based on current data-based research, and that ISTA strongly encourages using 7E instead. 7D no longer appears on ISTA’s thermal standards page at all.
So a container described as validated to 7D was tested against an outdated general simulation. That is not fraud and it is not nothing. It is also not the same claim as a container qualified under Standard 20 against 7E profiles.
One more distinction worth knowing. no package is simply ISTA certified because its maker says so. A certified laboratory runs the profiles under the Standard 20 process, and then ISTA reviews the package before the thermal transport certification mark can be used. If a vendor uses the word certified, ask which mark, granted when, and against which profile.
You set the acceptance criteria, not the vendor
This is the part almost nobody tells a first-time buyer, and it is written into the procedure itself. ISTA 7D requires the shipper, meaning you, to define the product temperature limits and any acceptable excursion time before testing begins. ISTA does not supply a pass mark.
That means the phrase holds temperature for 48 hours is incomplete by design. Holds what temperature, measured where in the payload, with what excursion allowance, against which ambient profile. Two vendors can run identical boxes and publish different durations purely by choosing different acceptance criteria.
Before you compare any two shippers, write down your own limits. What is the product’s allowed range, how long can it sit outside that range before the sample is compromised, and does a brief spike matter as much as a slow drift. Your laboratory owns those answers. Once you have them, vendor duration claims become comparable. Until then they are not.
A duration figure is not a duration
Published hours move enormously with season, and the good spec sheets show it. It is common to see a 2 to 8 degree configuration rated for around 30 hours in a summer profile and more than 60 in a winter profile. Same box, same coolant, twice the runway.
Watch for configurations that publish only one season. A frozen configuration with a summer number and no winter number is not necessarily worse, but you are being shown the number the vendor chose to show.
Three more things move the real duration and rarely appear on the sheet. Payload mass matters, because a half-empty box behaves differently from a full one and the qualification was run at a specific fill. Preconditioning matters enormously with phase change material, which has to be brought to a defined state before packout, and a warehouse that conditions it wrong voids the qualified duration without anyone noticing. And the temperature at the moment of packout matters, because a warm payload spends the first hours of its budget cooling itself.
The temperature words are not interchangeable
USP General Chapter 659 defines these, and the definitions are tighter than common usage.

So a shipper marketed as CRT with a 15 to 25 degree range is not describing USP controlled room temperature. It may be perfectly fit for your product. It is not the same claim, and if your protocol says CRT, that gap is the sort of thing an auditor finds. WHO notes the term is not widely used precisely because ambient varies so much.
What the box costs before anything goes in it
Thermal shippers are mostly insulation, and insulation is volume. A box with an eight litre payload commonly has an external footprint several times that.
Carriers bill the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, and dimensional weight is the external dimensions multiplied together and divided by a divisor set in your carrier agreement. Do that arithmetic with the external dimensions on the spec sheet, using your own current divisor rather than a number you remember, and compare it against the actual packed weight. On a well-insulated parcel shipper the dimensional figure usually wins, which means you are paying for the air the insulation occupies, in both directions if the shipper is reusable and comes back.
That calculation, done before you select, is usually a larger number over a program’s life than the unit price difference between two candidate shippers.
A qualified shipper is not a qualified lane
The container qualification tells you the box can hold a profile. It does not tell you your route stays inside that profile.
Transit time is the variable that actually breaks cold chain programs, and a residential return leg is the worst of it. A shipper qualified to 30 hours is fine on a next-day lane and a liability on a lane where a Friday pickup sits in a facility until Monday. Map the real transit times for your actual origins and destinations, including the worst case day of week, before you accept any duration figure as sufficient.
And a thermal shipper does not satisfy specimen transport requirements on its own. Diagnostic specimens generally ship under UN3373 and IATA Packing Instruction 650, which governs the primary receptacle, absorbent, secondary packaging and marking. That requirement sits alongside the thermal design, not inside it. Confirm both, and confirm the applicable classification for your material with your own regulatory lead.
What to ask before you qualify
- Which standard, which profile, which season, and was it an independent certified laboratory.
- What acceptance criteria were used, expressed as temperature limits and excursion allowance.
- What payload mass and what packout configuration the published duration was achieved at.
- What preconditioning the coolant requires, in hours and at what temperature, and what happens to duration if it is skipped.
- The external dimensions, so you can run dimensional weight yourself.
- Whether the duration was measured with loggers in the payload or at the wall of the container, because those are different numbers.
Practical takeaways
- Write your own temperature limits and excursion allowance before you read a single vendor sheet. Without them, no duration claim is comparable.
- Treat a standard name as a question rather than an answer. Ask which profile and which season.
- Qualify the lane, not just the box, and use your worst realistic transit time rather than the carrier’s published one.
- Run dimensional weight from the external dimensions before you choose, with your current carrier divisor.
- Ask what preconditioning the coolant needs, then confirm your warehouse actually does it that way.
- Keep the thermal question and the specimen packaging question separate. Meeting one does not meet the other.
